CMU MSCF Guide for Fall 2027 Applicants

By Fiona Taft, October 15, 2026

Carnegie Mellon's MSCF is a 16-month program in Pittsburgh or New York with a required internship and two Fall 2027 rounds. Tests, the new MSCF Quantitative Assessment, costs and outcomes from CMU's own pages.

Carnegie Mellon's Master of Science in Computational Finance (MSCF) is a 16-month, full-time program that you take in either Pittsburgh or New York City. It's run by the Tepper School of Business with three other CMU departments, and it includes a required summer internship. For Fall 2027 there are two rounds, December 1, 2026 and March 1, 2027, and the application fee is $125. The Fall 2026 class has 102 students, chosen from 886 applicants. CMU's admissions page asks for a GRE or GMAT score, and a September 2026 program announcement adds a new MSCF Quantitative Assessment as an alternative.

I'm Fiona Taft, founder of QuantMinds, former Executive Director of UC Berkeley's MFE program and former Associate Director at Stanford University. Program details here come from Carnegie Mellon's MSCF pages, its 2026 employment report and other official CMU pages, and the comparison figures from Princeton's and Baruch's own pages, all checked on October 15, 2026. Quoted advice comes from my recorded webinars on quant master's programs, lightly edited for clarity, and the rest is my own view.

Who the CMU MSCF fits

Carnegie Mellon is one of the programs I'd prioritize. Walking through a list of top U.S. programs in my AMA on MFE programs, I said, "I think from this list, some of the programs that I would prioritize would be Carnegie Mellon, would be Baruch, would be UChicago, would be Princeton."

It's a big program, and that's part of the value. In my webinar What You Need to Be Doing NOW to Be Competitive for MFE & Master's Programs, I said, "Are you looking to have a bigger class? Maybe it's 60, 80, or 100 plus? Then you're going to be looking at programs like CMU, Georgia Tech, Berkeley, and other programs... because it's not only the network that you will be getting from previous alumni, but the network in your class." CMU lists more than 2,300 MSCF alumni working across the financial industry.

The MSCF leans toward quant research. In its Class of 2026 report, 45% of full-time jobs were in quant research, 20% in sales and trading and 15% in strats and modeling. If you're aiming at quant research, the outcomes fit. The Fall 2026 class is 72% international, and 80% of the class came in without full-time work experience, and CMU says relevant experience is preferred but not required.

Pittsburgh or New York. CMU says you can choose to study in either city. Its pages don't say when you make that choice, so ask admissions. CMU says students in both cities get live classroom instruction, faculty office hours, career services and employer recruiting. Classes are linked across the two locations, and the New York location runs on-campus interview weeks for students from both cities.

Curriculum

Before classes start, you take an online Summer Launch course and then a required three-week in-person orientation from August 1. CMU lists four prep courses, Math Prep, Probability Prep, Programming Prep and Markets Prep. CMU's FAQ says every incoming student must take and pass Probability Prep and Programming Prep.

Your first year covers stochastic calculus, Python, financial data science and team projects, built to get you ready for your summer internship. The curriculum includes a seven-course data science sequence covering machine learning and statistical methods for financial data. You'll use C++ and Python, plus VBA, R, SQL and KDB+.

In your final semester, you mix required and elective courses around a focus such as quantitative research, financial computing, asset management, algorithmic trading or risk management. The curriculum page describes a 14-week capstone in which second-year students work in teams on a real problem at a financial firm, guided by an MSCF faculty member and company mentors, ending in December with a report and presentation.

A few more pieces are worth knowing.

  • Bloomberg. Every student completes the Bloomberg Markets Certificate and has access to Bloomberg Terminals.
  • Communication. Alongside business communication courses, a Communication Development Program gives individual coaching on written and spoken communication.
  • Blockchain and digital assets. The second-year course list includes Cryptocurrency and Blockchain, Theory to Practice, and the program's August 2026 letter says CMU will introduce new coursework in blockchain, cryptocurrency and digital assets.
  • Working. The program is full-time and on campus only. CMU says working during the program is impractical and not recommended, apart from the summer internship.

The required summer internship

The summer internship after your first year is a degree requirement, and you can't be exempted from it. Students who can't get an internship do an unpaid, faculty-supervised research project on campus instead.

International students should look at internship rules closely. In my AMA, I said, "You want to think about, for each of these programs, do they have a required internship? That is really important with the currently updated policies and regulations when it comes to OPT." At CMU, the required internship connects to CPT, the work authorization F-1 students need for internships during a degree. CMU's FAQ says you need an accepted U.S. internship offer and must complete the CPT process with CMU's Office of International Education. It adds that the required internship exempts F-1 students from CPT's one-academic-year enrollment rule, giving a student returning from a leave of absence as its example. OPT, the work authorization after graduation, is separate. CMU's international office says F-1 students with degrees in a designated STEM field may qualify for a 24-month OPT extension. The MSCF pages checked for this guide don't state the program's STEM designation, so confirm it with the program and the Office of International Education.

Internship results for the students who graduated in December 2025 were strong. All 99 students seeking an internship accepted one, and the mean monthly base pay was $11,490, with a median of $11,267. 57% of internships were in quant research, and 79% were in the New York metro area.

Admission requirements

You need a four-year bachelor's degree, or a foreign equivalent, before the program starts. CMU lists these prerequisites.

  • Calculus I and II
  • Linear algebra
  • Calculus-based probability
  • At least one semester of an object-oriented programming language (C++, Java, Python or C#), with more than one semester preferred

If you're missing one, CMU will still consider you, provided you complete the remedial work before you enroll. One or more years of professional work that heavily involves object-oriented programming can stand in for programming coursework. Relevant work experience is preferred but not required.

If a math course is weak or missing, fix it before you apply. CMU's FAQ says to take any missing prerequisites for a grade at an accredited college or university, and that open courseware isn't recommended. The optional essay is the place to explain it. In my webinar on being competitive for MFE programs, I said, "For some of those more math-heavy courses, it is better to get a letter grade as opposed to a certificate... that's something that I do recommend that you address in your essays, is talking about, these were courses I took in my undergrad, but since that time, I have taken these courses."

The application includes the following.

  • Official transcripts from every school you attended, uploaded as legible scans
  • A resume of one to two pages, with month and year dates for each position
  • Three letters of recommendation. If you're a current student or graduated within the last three years, one should be academic, and CMU prefers at least one professional letter. Your application doesn't go to the committee until all three arrive
  • A choice of your intended career path, then two short essays of up to 350 words each and a 90-second video essay
  • An optional additional essay of up to two pages
  • GRE or GMAT scores, or the MSCF Quantitative Assessment if CMU confirms it for your round (see below)
  • Duolingo, TOEFL or IELTS scores for international applicants, unless you meet an exemption
  • The $125 fee

The essays. The first asks for examples from your professional or academic experience of skills you'll apply in your chosen career path. The second asks about a time you overcame a challenge to succeed. The video essay asks what specific steps you took and what resources you used to secure a previous academic or professional opportunity, and how that experience will help in your career.

Video essays work differently from program to program. Speaking about applications in general in my AMA, I said, "Then there can be short essays. There can also be video essays that you need to do live where you only get one or two opportunities to record for a couple minutes." CMU's admissions page doesn't say whether its video is recorded live or how many takes you get, so rehearse until you can deliver a clear 90-second answer on the first try.

What CMU looks for. In its own words, CMU wants applicants who communicate clearly in writing and in person, thrive in collaborative team settings, and show genuine interest in financial markets with clear career goals. It describes its review as holistic, and says a weakness in one area can be balanced by strength in another.

Interviews. Interviews are by invitation only, either on campus or online, with a member of the admissions team. CMU's FAQ says they're generally more behavioral than technical and usually last 15 to 30 minutes. The committee can invite you at any point between your submission and the decision date.

Choose recommenders carefully, because you need three. In my AMA, I said, "You also need to think about your recommenders. There is a strategy there. You need to have strong recommenders."

GRE, GMAT or the MSCF Quantitative Assessment

This is the part of the Fall 2027 application to watch closely. CMU's admissions page says an official, valid GRE or GMAT score is required and that an application won't be reviewed without one. On September 14, 2026, the program announced the MSCF Quantitative Assessment as an alternative to the GRE and GMAT. Here's what that announcement says.

  • Choice. You submit either the assessment or official GRE or GMAT scores, and you can do both.
  • Format. 20 multiple-choice questions in one hour, online, from anywhere, and free. No specialized finance background is required.
  • Content. Calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics, and computer science.
  • Timing. Two time slots per application round, with dates to be announced later in the fall. You take it once, in the round you apply.

I covered this in my AMA. "Carnegie Mellon recently announced that they are going to be doing their own assessment... This would be their own quantitative assessment... Prior to this year, they accepted the GRE. Now, this year, they are still accepting the GRE. That quant version of the GRE is super important. But they are also giving you the option of taking their quantitative assessment."

Until the admissions page matches the announcement, confirm with the MSCF admissions office before relying on the assessment alone. The announcement doesn't say whether the assessment will run for Round 1 (December 1, 2026), so if you apply in Round 1, plan on a GRE or GMAT unless admissions tells you otherwise. If you take the GRE, the Fall 2026 class averaged 169 on the quantitative section, and CMU's FAQ recommends the GRE if you haven't taken either test. CMU accepts scores that arrive within two weeks of your round's deadline.

Deadlines and timeline for Fall 2027

RoundApplication deadlineDecision releaseDeposit deadline
Round 1December 1, 2026February 26, 2027March 25, 2027
Round 2March 1, 2027April 30, 2027May 16, 2027

Once you're admitted, you need to be on campus for orientation on August 1. CMU doesn't offer deferrals.

Apply in the round where your application is strongest. In my AMA, I said, "If you are not ready to apply by that first round, wait for that second round. You want to have your materials, your recommenders, your SOPs, and all of your materials lined up. Maybe you're upskilling, maybe you're taking a couple courses." I've also cautioned that a program's last round can have fewer spots left, and Round 2 is CMU's last round. CMU doesn't say how its seats are split between rounds.

Cost and funding

CMU's Student Financial Services page lists 2026-27 MSCF tuition of $71,800 for the fall and spring semesters ($35,900 each). Its estimated total cost of attendance for those two semesters is $110,408 in Pittsburgh and $112,606 in New York. That covers tuition, required fees, housing, food, books, health insurance, personal costs, a travel allowance and $1,500 in estimated loan fees that apply only to students who borrow federal loans. The program runs a third semester after the summer internship, and CMU doesn't publish a full-program total or 2027-28 tuition, so budget for that semester on top of these figures.

  • Fellowships. All admitted students are automatically considered for MSCF Fellowships of up to $60,000. CMU says these are partial awards, are extremely competitive, and that every admitted student is expected to pay at least part of tuition. A Squarepoint Foundation gift funds five fellowships for students from underrepresented socioeconomic backgrounds in the 2026-27 class.
  • Loans. U.S. citizens and permanent residents may qualify for federal Direct loans. CMU notes that starting July 1, 2026, federal law eliminates Grad PLUS loans for new borrowers and sets new graduate loan limits. CMU also says a few private loan options are open to qualified non-U.S. citizens without a U.S. cosigner.

Career outcomes

CMU publishes a yearly employment report about seven months after graduation. The Class of 2026 report covers 99 students who graduated in December 2025.

  • Offers. By graduation, 76 of the 98 graduates seeking work (78%) had accepted an offer, and all 98 had accepted one within three months. CMU's count includes short-term internships and short-term employment of at least 20 hours a week for at least 10 weeks, so it isn't a pure full-time job rate.
  • Pay. Full-time base salary averaged $145,653, with a median of $145,000. The median signing bonus was $35,000 and the median indicative year-end bonus was $57,500.
  • Roles. Of full-time jobs, 45% were in quant research, 20% in sales and trading and 15% in strats and modeling, with the rest in risk management, data science, portfolio management, quant development and other roles.
  • Industry. 33% investment banks, 26% hedge funds, 19% asset management and 13% proprietary trading.
  • Location. 59% in the New York metro area, 28% elsewhere in the U.S., 7% international and 6% in Chicago.

The employers hiring the most graduates full-time were BNP Paribas (7) and Morgan Stanley (5), followed by Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Millennium and Squarepoint with 4 each. CMU itself notes that there's no common reporting standard across these programs and that the reports aren't audited, so compare definitions when you line them up.

Use these reports to judge your return on the degree. In my webinar on being competitive for MFE programs, I said, "You want to understand what your ROI, your return on investment, is going to be for these Master's programs. Where did Baruch place last year? Where did CMU place last year? These are all really important."

Career support. Full-time career coaches in Pittsburgh and New York work with you from your first semester. In 2026, about 100 students took part in the annual Employer Trek, visiting 30 organizations in New York City and Chicago. During the fall there's a weekly Speaker Series, and a six-seminar Quantitative Problem Solving series helps you prepare for interviews. CMU's employer calendar lists September 2, 2026 as the start of on-campus recruiting.

How CMU compares with Princeton and Baruch

  • Carnegie Mellon MSCF. A Fall 2026 entering class of 102, 16 months, Pittsburgh or New York, two rounds, GRE or GMAT (with the new assessment announced as an alternative), and $71,800 in 2026-27 tuition for fall and spring.
  • Princeton MFin. About 40 in each class, four semesters, one deadline (December 15, 2026), GRE or GMAT optional. See my Princeton MFin guide.
  • Baruch MFE. 26 admitted of 561 for Fall 2026, three semesters full-time or five to six part-time, with classes after 6 p.m., four rounds, and its own Quantitative Background Assessment instead of the GRE or GMAT. See my Baruch MFE guide.

The names differ, but don't let that decide for you. In my AMA, I said, "A lot of these programs have created different names to differentiate themselves. Some of the programs might be more technical. Some of these programs might be more focused on finance skills and acumen and economics, as opposed to technical skills." For the wider field, including deadlines for 16 programs, read how to choose a quant master's program.
